Landmannalaugar, day hike. We reserved our tour through Arctic Adventures.
After a 2 hour very bumpy bus ride from Hella, Iceland, we arrived at Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland. During the trip you travel from the highway to a dirt road full of potholes and large rocks. Your first glimpse at the reserve will take your breath away with rolling hills and beautifully calm lakes.
We wore layers and did not regret it. This hike shifted from rain drizzle, to strong winds, to warm, back to cold and rainy. We put on our wind/rain pants at the start of the hike and we’re very thankful we did because we reached the top it was incredibly windy.

This hike had a range of views that were out of this world. You start by hiking through cooled lava formations and see the rock type that inspired dragon glass. The scene is made by the steam rising from the earth. As you ascend to the hilltop the steam and lava formations transport you to another world. It’s hard not to imagine hobbits, elves, and dragons as you go.
After reaching the top we descended by a path on the other side which opened to a different perspective – rolling hills, sunny skies, streams, and cotton ball flowers with sheep grazing on the hill sides. We were in awe. This park is easily the most beautiful place I have ever experienced.
To conclude the hike we took a dip in the natural hot springs. The perfect way to relax within nature.
