Vatnajökull Glacier – pronounced “fat yogurt”
We reserved a tour through Arctic Adventures. We met them at Skaftafell National Park for the tour.
They supplied crampons, helmet, and ice pick thing. You need to pack your own lunch and bring water. We had to rent hiking books. Our shoes wouldn’t work because you need extra ankle support for the crampons. $10 per person. The tour total for both of us was $307.88 including tax and the boot rental. Optional to add a tip for the guide.

It was about a 4 hour hike. The guide was very knowledgeable. The views were unbelievable. We are very happy we chose this hike. Dress in layers because the weather shifts quickly in Iceland. We were very fortunate and had a sunny day so the hike was very comfortable weather wise. Ability wise – the hike was easy for Chad and I, who try to keep a consistently active lifestyle.
A little about Vatnajökull Glacier:
- Is considered one of the largest glaciers in Europe
- The Glacier sits in Vatnajökull National Park
Highlights:
Amazing views (see below)
Drinking water fresh from the glacier
Knowledgeable and friendly staff
Cons:
No glacier/ice climbing, which we were expecting. If you want to do that you need to sign up for the “extreme” tour.
We would have been up for a longer more advanced hike. So we will do that next time 😉
